Am I There Yet?: The Loop-de-loop, Zigzagging Journey to Adulthood

NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER • This on-point guide to growing up by Instagram sensation Mari Andrew features “achingly vulnerable and completely relatable watercolor illustrations about relationships, heartbreak and the struggles of urban life” (The Washington Post).

In the journey toward adulthood, it is easy to find yourself treading the path of those who came before you; the path often appears straight and narrow, with a few bumps in the road and a little scenery to keep you inspired. But what if you don’t want to walk a worn path? What if you want to wander? What if there is no map to guide you through the detours life throws your way?

From creating a home in a new city to understanding the link between a good hair dryer and good self-esteem to dealing with the depths of heartache and loss, these tales of the twentysomething document a road less traveled—a road that sometimes is just the way you’re meant to go.

This collection of wit and wisdom about navigating life would be a perfect gift for women in their twenties, but it also reads great for us older folks who’ve been through those times and are reminded of all we’ve learned and are still learning.I’ve followed Andrew on Instagram for about a year, so I thought I would’ve seen all the artwork, but with over 180 pages of drawings, there’s many here I’ve never seen. Plus, they look even better in full-sized prints. There’s also thirteen illustrated essays that run four pages each, covering everything from travel and milestones to finding your style. The artwork is grouped into chapters covering topics like Overcoming Uncertainty and Creating Home, and there’s lots of insights on all the ups and downs of dating, changing jobs, and moving to a new city. There’s great bits of humor, and it’s also inspiring in how she gained strength and maturity from even the worst moments of grief and confusion. The book itself couldn’t be presented better. The cover has a great texture, the endpapers are painted with watercolor brushstrokes, the pages are thick so the artwork doesn’t show through, the colors are vibrant, and the font for the essays has a stylish flair.

Very interesting read about growing up, uncertainties and making your own path in life. The quality of the book is very nice as well (hard cover, sharp colours, solid construction).

This book is an easy read – in the sense that it evokes the clearest of emotions and feelings. I thought about it a long time after I finished it – I remember some bits almost everyday. Mari Andrew writes about life, and breaks down the complexity of it all into illustrated lists. It is a book with both beautifully nostalgic prose (with clever call-backs) and also lovable illustrations – and they blend together very harmoniously. The way she expresses her doubts and troubles are not only relatable, but also brutally honest. However, the reason I LOVE the book is because her take-away messages are very different than mine! That is the value of the book – it is hopeful, positive and realistic.

A wonderfully funny, inspiring, and heartwarming read. Finds a great balance between tackling tough subjects like grief and hearbreak while inspiring a sense of optimism.Great balance of text and illustration. Text provides meaningful context to Mari’s wonderful illustrations and inspires deeper reflection on the points or questions she raises. Recommended read for anyone who has struggled at all with questions about their relationships, jobs, purpose etc.I do wish that the book wasn’t quite so heteronormative and amatonormative *but* it does represent the author’s own (straight, monogamy-seeking) journey so it totally makes sense; I won’t fault her for that. Basically, I loved it so much that I can’t help but want to see a similar book that represents other relationship styles, orientations, etc. and their inherent joys and challenges in such a relatable way.
