The pencils are just a cylindrical piece of diamond art ‘wax’ encased in paper, which can be sharpened in the same way as a normal pencil. However, there is a good reason why these tools normally come with a metal tip! Without that metal, the soft wax just spreads out, collapses and breaks off. It is therefore inaccurate in its placement of the small plastic diamonds and also leaves behind small clumps of wax. I would not recommend these.

On the positive side, these wax pencils are easy to sharpen with the sharpener provided and they feel like a regular pencil when you’re using them. On the negative side, they pick up AB drills better than regular drills (and I don’t use AB drills that often), and it’s hard to adjust placed drills with them (I often have to move placed drills a little bit to line them up). My biggest quibble is the length of them. They’re totally impractical and I ended up snapping one in half to make it more usable.
