Note: Update at bottom.I am of a “certain age” where my roots have become highly noticeable after 3 weeks. Despite my sense of vanity, I refuse to spend the time and, more importantly, the money to go to a salon every 3 weeks to get root touch-ups done. It was costing me over $125 per visit when I finally called it quits. That’s over $2000 per year!I tried box dyes and what a disaster that was. I used the highest rated ones costing $15+, and the last one I used came out patchy, and faded to a matte, lifeless near-black, instead of brown. Even worse, it absolutely fried my once soft hair. That’s when I swore off box dyes.Despite the mixed reviews about grey coverage, I tried this Adore semi-permanent dye and was shocked at everything I loved about it:-No mixing, just pour straight out of the bottle into your dish and apply with a hair colouring brush. It’s easy to just pour out a small amount of the ready-made product and save the rest for a future application. With box dyes, there’s no way to store unused dye, which is costly and wasteful. One bottle of Adore is usually enough for 2 full applications on my chin-length hair.-Smells nice, but not at all overpowering, and definitely no harsh chemical odours like box dyes.-It’s a semi-thick formula that’s easy to apply and doesn’t run down my face nearly as much as box dyes.-You can get this shade (mocha) on your skin (including all over your face along your hairline) and it washes off easily within one or two shampoos.-If you drip on the floor, sink, or wall, it wipes away more easily than permanent box dyes, with a bit of soap and water. However, it does penetrate silicone and becomes almost impossible to remove. It also stains my white tub and shower tiles, but typically comes off with a few showers or a good scrubbing with a tile cleaner and scrubbing sponge.I find application of this Adore dye much less stressful than box dyes. I can do root touch-ups any night of the week and not need to worry about stains along my hairline or on my ears the next day when I go out. It mostly washes away with the first shampoo and conditioning. (I should mention, however, that not all Adore shades are this forgiving. Some shades, like Neon Pink, stains skin for days!)Does Adore cover greys as thoroughly as a box dye does? No, definitely not. It tints them a lighter brown, making them look almost like highlights. I actually like that. I find that box dyes leave my hair colour looking flat and matte.Does the colour last as long as a box dye? No. But since the application is so uncomplicated and low-stress, I don’t mind dyeing my hair every three weeks. One important tip! Make sure you put a plastic bag or processing cap completely over your hair after you’ve applied the dye. Anything you leave exposed to the air will just not absorb the dye nearly as well. This is why there are so many comments about poor coverage, or the coverage not lasting more than a few shampoos. For maximum penetration into the hair shaft, I put on two processing caps and let it sit for a full hour, to give my hair extra heat so that the dye absorbs deeply. I get excellent grey coverage by using this method and the colour lasts for weeks even though I don’t use colour-safe shampoo and wash every day. Finally, one huge improvement over other semi-permanent dyes is that after the first 2-4 shampoos (depending on how hot you shower; cool water is best), this shade barely bleeds out anymore. With other semi-permanent brands I tried, my hands and tub were getting stained every day for the first 5-10 shampoos (looking at you, Arctic Fox). Adore stains much less, even the first time. It also doesn’t stain my cloth shower curtain, nor my greyish towels. I just toss them in the wash afterwards and the colour comes right out. (Not sure if it would stain white, though, so proceed with caution.) I still recommend wearing gloves during application and during the first rinse in the shower, though. It will stain your hands a bit if they are exposed continually during the process.Bottom line, if you’re budget conscious but can’t stand the stress, mess, and harshness of box dyes, definitely give Adore a try.Update September 2024: After using Adore dyes for more than a year, I tried Clairol Beautiful Collection semi-permanent dyes. I find them to be even better than Adore. I prefer their brown shades (they have ash brown options), they fade more nicely, and they don’t stain my bathroom tiles or tub whatsoever.Adore is less expensive and less drying for my hair, but I just prefer the application process and colour outcomes of Clairol Beautiful Collection.

Absolutely Great. I bought a dark purple hair wig and felt uncomfortable with it as there was no black in it so I bought this in Jet black for the roots and some wig tips to dye it. Now my wig is absolutely fabulous because it has turned from a dark purple wig to Midnight Purple wig. I’m very happy and will be buying more colours from here of needed. Quick delivery too.
