Tldr; if you leave the dye in for 8 hours and use some more common sense, you can get this dye to stick around for an insanely long time. Read further to understand what I’m talking about. So first off, my hairdresser was trimming my hair and remarks that there’s purple in the back of my head, I was absolutely awestruck because my last I job was about 3 months ago. There is still Manic Panic stuck in my hair after three months, that’s how good it can stick. For some people that might be a bad thing, but for me I thought it was incredible and really funny. The pictures I have here in the white shirt, I just completed the dye job last night. So the white shirt pictures of me are day one right after dying, the other picture is my natural hair color before and after. The color doesn’t really fade too much at all over a couple of weeks, read on to find out how I managed to keep it this way! I hope this help somebody, and I’m 100% not sorry for the absolute novel of a review that I’m going to leave behind LOLThe color that I use is plum passion, and usually my dye job can last for about a month to a month-and-a-half without needing to be redone. Here is how I managed to do that.First off my hair is at level seven color naturally so I’m very lucky in that respect. See my before and after photo for a good look at my hair color naturally. I don’t use any bleach or any other dye chemicals on my hair before dying. I don a pair of gloves, take one entire tub and put it all over my entire head including my scalp, and every square inch of hair that I can find, THUROUGHLY.I have a deathhawk with bangs, so I don’t actually need an entire tub but since these are so cheap I go overkill on purpose just in case I missed any spots.Once I’m done with that, I take a shower cap and put it over top of my hair and tie a bandana over everything to keep it still.I then go to bed in my dye t-shirt and a towel over the pillow, and sleep in my dye for 8 hours. Yes, you read that correctly. The reason why this doesn’t hurt your hair is because this is a semi-permanent dye which means it’s just a conditioner with a deposit pigment. If this was a box dye/permanent dye then YES, it would melt your hair off to do that for 8 hours. So contrary to what the bottle says, don’t leave it in for 45 minutes and expect a Dye job that will last for a month. The longer you leave it in, the more pigment gets to make contact with your hair and stay. Now keep in mind you want to use COLD water when taking a shower, and for me I wait until the very end of the shower and use a dime size amount of color safe shampoo.I then wash my hair in icy cold water as fast as I possibly can, because the less time that soap is on my hair the less dye will get washed out.As far as I’m concerned, the color doesn’t deposit on shirts or Sheets or car seats, I don’t have any of that problem.I don’t use Vaseline around my face, I just use a makeup wipe after I’m done with my dye job and take my gloves off, and it comes right off.My scalp is stained purple for like 2 days, but that’s about it.Now if you’re feeling really brave and you know your hair well, because mine is thick and greasy normally and very healthy and strong, I will actually wash it with Dawn dish soap right before I do a Dye job, I make sure it’s properly rinsed all the way through and dried 100% before applying to die.The greasier that your hair is, the less the dye will be able to grab hold of your hair, that’s why on the box it says to wash your hair before adding the dye. This product does not smell funny, but it will stain Fabrics if it touches them. We’re an old shirt and use gloves. When I’m done with a Dye job, my hair is extremely soft and silky and hydrated and Lush.I see a lot of people complaining about the colors washing away, but you have to take into account that this is NOT a permanent dye. If you have bleached hair then expect it to turn out a different color, if you didn’t wash your hair before dying, of course it’s not going to stay well.If you take a shower and lather for 10 minutes with a shampoo that’s not dye safe in steaming hot water, of course you’re going to wash the dye out. It’s not rocket science. Granted everybody’s hair reacts different to different things as well, and that’s not the fault of the company. That’s just human nature.I hope this review help somebody make a good decision, or may have enlightened somebody on a different way of keeping the pigments nice, if you have any questions please ask on the product page and if it involves the plum passion color, then I should be able to answer.Overall I’m very happy with Manic Panic, and I don’t intend to go looking around for any other guys because this is the exact shade of purple that I was dreaming of oh, and it doesn’t damage my hair, it actually hydrates and helps it.
