In appearance this treatment is somewhere between a thick volumising conditioner and a paste- white and a bit yoghurt-like, it’s tempting just to use it as a regular conditioner. But that would be wasteful as it’s in the proper application that the point of this product lies, and it does seem to be rather good at it.The short-term effect reminds me of those ‘tingle’ shampoos which seem to excite the scalp just a little bit, usually to feel invigorating rather than to help with the condition. The aroma is partly minty, again like those shampoos, but with a camphor-like tone to it which makes it smell a bit more “serious chemical” and a touch old-fashioned too. It’s one of those hair products which is easier to use if you’ve got somebody to help you with it, especially if you’re inept like me. The applicator is nothing special- nothing more than a funnel really- so the more control you have over getting it directly onto the scalp rather than onto the nearby hair, the more value you’ll get out of it. (And considering the price for a small bottle, I certainly want to get as much value out of it as possible.)The results, well they are quite satisfying, and the reason I’m giving five stars. There’s a clear feeling in my scalp after using this that it feels healthier, and less itchy. As part of a hair session using ‘the good stuff’ rather than ‘the everyday stuff’- coupled with my favourite shampoo and conditioner and generally a bit of pampering- I feel like there’s a tangible positive difference in the feel of my head after use.I’ll be saving this for special occasions- the bottle recommends weekly, but I might get away with using it even less and making it last longer- and using it on the big days where I really want my hair to look and feel pleasant.

I’ve had scalp psoriasis for the last 15yrs and I’ve tried everything my dermatologist has thrown at it. I’ve also tried to source other products myself that may help it too, and I’ve tried a few! So I jumped at the chance of testing this in the attempt to try and help it. I was skeptic at first, but I’ve used it a few times now and I’ve noticed a difference in the itchiness of my psoriasis. Part of having psoriasis is the itch/scratch cycle which seems never ending. The psoriasis itches, you scratch it, that irritates the psoriasis causing it to get worse, then it itches, and the cycle continues and never ends. So for me if you can do anything to try and break that cycle then I’m all for trying it. I use this prior to washing my hair and it’s really easy to use. I just spray my hair damp, brush it through. I separate my hair where the psoriasis is and apply the product and massage it in making sure the area with psoriasis is covered. I then use the nozzle that comes with the tube and makes it easier to apply and makes it less messy. I apply the product from the front of my hairline over the top of my head and down to my back of my head in 1 inch sections. I start at my left ear and then work across my head to my right ear. I then use my fingers to massage the product on my scalp and then clip ot up leaving it in for 20mins. I then rinse my hair and shampoo and condition as normal. I’ve noticed my scalp is definitely less itchy, and whilst it won’t cure my scalp psoriasis it definitely helps with the itch/scratch cycle so it’s a winner for me!!

Michael van Clarke’s silicone free Exfoliating Scalp Treatment comes in a 100ml tube and should give 4 or 5 applications per tube. It is designed to remove old product build up and contains aloe vera, menthol, eucalyptus oil and other ingredients with antibacterial and antioxidant properties. The blurb recommends that you use on a weekly basis, but I must admit that it is a bit of a faff to apply and you need to leave it on for 20 minutes before rinsing off and then shampooing and conditioning. Having used it once, I can confirm that it smells fresh – a minty eucalyptus/tea tree scent – and my scalp felt tingly when it was applied so I felt it was doing something. However, given that I was using it with the Exfoliating Scalp Shampoo and subsequently used the shampoo on its own several times with the same (to me) result, I really question the need for this product though obviously my feeling is based purely on my own hair condition. On that basis, plus the 20 minutes sitting time recommended, and the fact that the product adds nearly £19 (at time of review) to the cost of these premium branded products, I would not buy or use again when I am using the MvC exfoliating scalp shampoo. 3*
